Journal of Voyages of the American bark MOONLIGHT from Liverpool to Phila[delphia], Commanded by Charles Waterhouse
Log Book, Journal of Voyages of the American Bark MOONLIGHT from Liverpool to Phila[delphia], Commanded by Charles Waterhouse, 1877 (title from title page). The log records the brig's positions, weather and sailing conditions, and vessels and landmarks passed while at sea. In port, the log records the crew's activities, ship maintenance, and the progress of loading and unloading the vessel. This log kept by three different chief mates (based on names entered and handwriting) on a passage from Liverpool to Philadelphia, and thence to Norfolk, Virginia. Last passage written by Augustus Vanden Broecke was from Norfolk toward Nieuwe Diep [Amsterdam], but the vessel never completed this last passage. Leaked badly & had to be abandoned. Captain and officers even helped the crew attend the pumps. Vessel abandoned in the Atlantic at approximately 41 degrees 5' North & 38 degrees 41' West. Officers, crew, and captain's wife and two children all taken off safely and brought aboard the barkentine ELENA which was en route Baltimore to Queenstown or Falmouth.
