George Treworgy Account Book
Account book kept by George Treworgy for the schooners EBRO, OTRONTO, and ARIEL between 1841 and 1869. The book lists the vessels' income, from freight charges, and expenses, mostly for items like port and docking fees, pilotage, loading and unloading costs, supplies and repairs, and bills from named merchants. Treworgy's accounting is unusually detailed. His records of income list the type of cargo, usually bulk quantities of lumber, coal, granite, or fish; the quantity loaded onto his vessel; and the freight rate charged. Similarly, expense accounts list the number of hours a stevedore was employed, price per pound of oakum, and other details of operating a coasting schooner in the middle of the nineteenth century.
