Edward O. Dizer Log-Books

Two log-books kept by Captain Edward O. Dizer of St. George, Maine. The earlier of the two is a log-book for the 106' bark STAR (built 1847 in Thomaston, ME by George Thorndike), homeport of New Orleans in 1859. Started by Captain James Smith on a voyage from New York to New Orleans and finished by Edward O. Dizer on a trip from Pensacola to Pernambuco, Brazil, both in 1859. It is a formal record of weather, courses, and the workings of the ship at sea and in port, including notes on cargo and repairs. The second volume contains a variety of entries, including a rough log for the bark LONE STAR on a trip to Buenos Aires, Bombay, and Moulmain (now Mawlamyine, Myanmar) in 1861; copies of letters, contracts, and bills written by Edward O. Dizer while in Bombay and Moulmain; a brief account of Dizer's career as a captain and mate between 1865 and 1871; and receipts for crew wages paid by Dizer as captain of the brig OCEAN BELLE. These include a lengthy letter to the family of the LONE STAR's mate describing his death in a mutiny after leaving Moulmain and some of Edward Dizer's reflections on the death of his brother, Samuel, from whom Edward inherited the command of the LONE STAR in 1861.
