Lieutenant David Cate Log Book

Letter copy book containing Acting Volunteer Lieutenant David Cate's official correspondence with the U.S. Navy during the Civil War. The letters address the affairs of Cate's commands, the U.S. Bark PURSUIT and the steamers USS HENDRICK HUDSON and USS ARKANSAS, all of which were deployed along the U.S. Gulf Coast. Cate's letters deal with the outcomes of ordered maneuvers and small actions, issues with his crews, and provisioning and equipping his ships. Some accounts are copied here as well, where they were attached to correspondence. The volume was later used to for a history of Pemaquid, Maine, and for transcriptions of eighteenth century diaries from the Wiscasset area.
