Margaret M. Oakes Journal

Journal kept by Margaret M. Oaks (later, Margaret Bixby) on a voyage to Marseilles and Cuba as a child on her father's ship, the barkentine MARY JENNESS, in 1880. Her entries focus on weather, sailing conditions, places passed, and on life in port, including a detailed description of Marseilles. Margaret subsequently used this volume to keep a short-lived journal of her life in Brewer in 1882, as a place to write memorable extracts and quotations, and as an excercise book for French lessons. She also used it as a cookbook, mostly of recipes for baked goods. The latest entries are from 1921, when Margaret kept the reading list for her book club in Arlington, Massachusetts.
