Log of the schooner SAMUEL LEWIS and brig XENOPHONE
Log-book kept by Francis A. Russ of Belfast, Maine for two separate voyages: one from Salem to Aracati, Brazil and back on the schooner SAMUEL LEWIS with captain Elijah West in 1845; and the other a trip from Belfast to Cardenas, Cuba and New York on the brig XENEPHONE with captain Charles Wording in 1853. Both include notes on weather, courses, and sail configurations, as well as records of loading and maintenance in port. The book also includes Russ's notes on navigation, calculations to determine longitude from a chronometer, and sketches of the entrance to several harbors, mostly in Maine.
