Ledger
Witherle & Co. was a general store, ship chandlery, and vessel management firm in Castine, Maine. It was active in supplying the local fishing industry, as well as in shipbuilding, the coasting trades, and deep sea voyages. The business was founded in 1806 as a partnership between William Witherle (1784-1860) and Benjamin Hook (1783-1862), known as Hook & Witherle. Witherle took over the business as sole proprietor in 1808. He was joined by John Head Jarvis (1787-1850), and the business was known as Witherle & Jarvis from 1810 to 1844. From 1844 to 1855, the store was known as William Witherle & Co. The last iteration of the business, run by Witherle's son, William Howe Witherle (1821-1906), operated from 1855 to 1875 as Witherle & Co.
