Captain James C. Gilmore Account Book

Account book kept by Captain James Clifford Gilmore of Searsport, Maine. The first part of the book contains accounts for the bark EDWIN REED, bark C.D. BRYANT, and ship HENRIETTA while under Gilmore's command. These tally expenses for wages, provisions, repairs, towage, and customs fees against the vessels' income from freight charges at each port visited. Gilmore was sailing along deep sea, Cape Horn routes during the period covered by this book: ports visited include Cardiff, Rio de Janeiro, Hong Kong, Nagasaki, Shanghai, Port Townsend, and New York. Starting in 1896, Gilmore used this book to keep track of his investments in ships. These accounts, organized by vessel, list each dividend that Gilmore received, along with a final account of his profit or loss when the vessel was sold or wrecked. There is also an undated list of all the investment property that Gilmore owned, including vessels, real estate, and bank bonds, on page 251.
