Upton and Adams Waste Book, Castine, Maine, 1815-1817.  Title from cover.  A daybook for a general store and ship's chandlery; sale of fish; vessel expenses for freight and wages; investments and promissory notes; and auction bills, sails, customhouse accounts, etc.  Running daily record of payments and credits whether for sale of simple items, pay off of ship crews, settling accounts with shipbuilders, or other aspects of the businesses run by this partnership.  A number in the left column indicates this information was transferred to a ledger.  Notes at the end of the book include "Memorandum of Specie" including Spanish dollars, Boston money, gold and silver; "Memorandum of Goods delivered J.S. Stevens on account of our purchase of the brig CHARLES AND ELLEN"; and dimensions and expenses for the COMMODORE DECATUR, among other notes.

___ Upton and Thomas Adams operated a general store, [wharf?], ship chandlery, and other business as merchants in Castine. This daybook documents their extensive business activity during the period when Castine was occupied by the British for the first few months of 1815 during the War of 1812.  References to auction income refer to Adams activity as auctioneer for the sale of vessels and cargoes captured by British forces and brought into Castine Harbor.
