A very large ship's engine on a railroad flat car. " ALCO- ON THE GO One of the six Alco Model 251, 3000 HP, 16 cylinder engines built for use on the U.S.C.G. Icebreaker POLAR STAR leaves Auburn. The POLAR STAR, a 400 foot icebreaker, will be launched late in 1973. The ship's controllable pitch propeliors each will be powered by one 20,000 HP Pratt & Whitney Aircraft gas turbine, or two 16- cylinder ALCO 251s, giving the POLAR STAR a total of 78,000 SHP (shaft horsepower). Normal operations, including icebreaking, will still be in the diesel-electric mode. The gas turbines will be used in limited iceramming opeerations. In open water the six ALCO diesels will provide the ship's service electrical power. A sister, also using ALCO 251s, has been authorized. Alco Engines, White Motor Corporation is headquartered in Auburn, New York and manufactures heavy-duty, high horsepower diesel engines used in marine propulsion, oil fields, offshore drilling, railroad locomotives, and primary source or nuclear generating plant stand-by power applications."
