"Since Mrs. M. is also the principal of the McLain School, another of her jobs is to talk with teachers under her about their problems, etc. Here she talks with Miss Doris Jage, third grade teacher, doing her first year of teaching. They are disccussing the cumulative record which is kept on the progress and attitudes of every child and follows them right through high school." - Kost Ruohomaa, pink sheet notes on contact image 8B The photoessay follows a day in life of teacher and principal Doris MacDougal at the McLain Grammar School in Rockland, Maine. The essay focuses on the challenge of managing increasing class sizes as post-war baby boom starts to overwhelm schools across the country. The article illustrates both MacDougal's teaching and administrative responsibilities, with a bit of homelife at the end. Selected photos from this group were used in an article for Pageant magazine: Ruohomaa, Kosti. “Your Children’s Other Mother.” Pageant, Nov. 1951, pp 51-57.
