A boy points excitedly to the sand castle handiwork by him and his friends on Jones Beach off Long Island. In 1944, LIFE Magazine sent Kosti Ruohomaa to Jones Beach. He took photos of a diverse group enjoying the sun and sand. Jones Beach, an Island off Long Island, was made a state park in 1929, and to this day is a valued get-away spot for the population of New York City.
