Young women sleep on Jones Beach off Long Island. Crowds of people sit enjoying the beach behind them. In 1944, LIFE Magazine sent Kosti Ruohomaa to Jones Beach. He took photos of a diverse group enjoying the sun and sand. Jones Beach, an Island off Long Island, was made a state park in 1929, and to this day is a valued get-away spot for the population of New York City.
