Schooner AMERICA under sail, many people on deck. " The schooner-yacht AMERICA which was built and launched on May 3, 1967 at Goudy and Stevens Yard in East Boothbay, Maine, has been refurbished at the same yard. Designed by Sparkman and Stephens, AMERICA was built for the Schaeffer Brewing Company. After voyages in many parts of the world, Schaeffer sold AMERICA to the Friendly Ice Cream Company. More recently, the Friendly firm resold AMERICA to the Argentine yachtsman Carlos Perdomo. AMERICA was hauled on the Frank Sample Yard Railway at Boothbay Harbor. For those who want to recheck their recollections of AMERICA, the following information may be helpful. AMERICA's first skipper was Capt. Lester G. Hollett. She first sailed off Boothbay Harbor on May 21, 1967. Her measurements include LOA, 101'9"; LWL, 90'3"; beam 23'; draft 11'; length of keel, 80'; width of keel 10"; depth of keel, 2'; height of masts 97' and sail area 5,236'. The original sails were made by Ratsey and Lapthorne of New York City." [no NF ref]
