Fishing Boat

Bow on view of a boat with a small cuddy cabin and powered by a Johnson 200 horsepower ouboard motor mounted on a setback bracket. On the side of the hull is the legend Downeaster (builder?) and Corsair (model?) It is often desirable to move the mounting point of outboard engines aft from the hull's original transom by as much as 36 inches. The three principal benefits of this are: 1. The propeller runs in cleaner (i.e., less-turbulent or less aerated) water that exists behind the boat. 2. The engine can be raised (sometimes several inches) which reduces the hydrodynamic drag by having less of the engine lower unit submerged in the water. 3. By not having to notch the transom to mount the outboard motor, it makes the boat less vulnerable to following seas.
