The steamer CASTINE at Bangor, Maine. A 4-masted schooner and a tugboat can be seen behind the CASTINE as well as several town buildings in the background. The 71 foot steamboat CASTINE was built at Brewer, Maine in 1889. For 44 years the boat steamed around Penobscot Bay delivering passenger and freight to various docks, becoming part of shorefront community. Often the steamship companies would plan special holiday excursions in addition to general pleasure trips. For instance, there was the special Fourth of July excursion on the steamer CASTINE. The ship would pick up passengers from Searsport, Belfast, Northport Campground and Temple Heights and drop them off at Camden in order to partake of the Fourth of July activities. In 1935, while working along Vinalhaven in the fog it ran up on a ledge and rolled over. People panicked and were thrown in the water. Another steamer was nearby and rescued all but 4. During the night, the wind and waves came up and the boat was soon wrecked. "2920"
