View from Woodlawn House, Islesford, Maine. The view across the water includes homes on the opposite shore and mountains in the distance. The Woodlawn Inn was built by George Henry Fernald for George and Edna Gilley around 1893. After Edna's death it was closed in 1909 and 1910, but James Ray and Ada Dwelley took it over in 1911 and ran it for over 40 years. They added the seven-bedroom Annex and two cottages in the 1920s. The inn grew to include five buildings: one with bedrooms and a large living room; another with the dining room and laundry; and three individual cottages. Its 1948 brochure described Woodlawan as "a small hotel catering to those who look for peace and beauty and a quiet vacation" and noted that the "local mosquito extermination project is most effective." Rates in 1948 were $5.00 a day and $27.00 a week; by 1954 the weekly rate was $35.00. By 1964, when Dr. and Mrs. Alexander Tardy were operating Woodlawn, room rates were $12.00 a day and $75 per week on the American Plan, with three meals a day. After Woodlawn House closed, the buildings were sold separately as summer homes.
