East Market Square, Bangor, Maine Looking up Park Street from the corner of Harlow and State Streets in Bangor, Maine, ca.1880 to 1885. The lack of any electric poles or wiring is a big clue with this estimation. Also, looking at Bangor city directories from that time confirm the businesses visible during that time in the photograph. Businesses seen include: John H. Bacon, a printer on the corner of Harlow and State Streets. Tebbet's Coffins at 35 Park Street. William O. Tebbets undertaker. John Lynch on Park, a gold, silver, and nickel plater. Charles York & Co. a provisions store on Park Street The Unitarian Universalist Society Church can be seen at the top of the rise. https://digicom.bpl.lib.me.us/spc_bangor_images/171/ The First Universalist Society of Bangor, Maine, began in 1833. This church building was dedicated on Dec. 15, 1862. It was largely destroyed in the great Bangor fire of April 30, 1911, with only the outside walls remaining. Before reconstruction had begun, a wind storm brought down the side walls and damaged the rear wall. Plans were then re-drawn using only the front wall. The reconstructed building is now the building used by the Unitarian Universalist Society of Bangor, the product of the 1995 consolidation of the First Universalist Society and the Independent Congregational Society. https://library.hds.harvard.edu/exhibits/featured-images/first-universalist-society-bangor-maine
