View of the Joseph Hook Lobster Co. pound at Christmas Cove, South Bristol, Maine. The lobster company used this walled in area between Birch Island and the mainland to store lobsters for their operations in Boston. The wall of the pound was reinforced by a tugboat which was positioned downstream of the pound. The pound was destroyed by a violent northeast storm on March 6,1947. The terrific undertow ripped the dam to pieces causing a loss of $35,000.00. Just prior to the storm the dam held 35,000 lobsters which fortunately had been sold just before the dam was destroyed.
