Stereo view card of Norumbega Hall (lower right), Bangor, Maine. Built in 1854-55 by William G. Morse, Norumbega Hall stood on an island in the middle of the Kenduskeag, where the Norumbega parkway is today. 2,000 people could be accommodated (although crowds of 3,000 packed in for memorable occasions), 1,500 on the floor and 500 more in the galleries, and the seating consisted of moveable wooden benches. Origninaly named Market House, it had stalls for vendors and storage in the basement for their goods, as well as private meeting rooms and a smaller hall. Norumbega Hall was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1911, and the park that exists today was established as a firebreak of green space.
