Image of Blockhouse No. 1 in Central Park, Manhattan. Visible in image: The 'front' face of the Blockhouse, showing the metal-riveted door and steps added around the turn of the 20th century, and a firing port about halfway along the wall to the left of the door. The handwritten legend on the door is unfortunately not quite legible. This photograph was taken before 1905, when a commemorative plaque (subsequently stolen) was placed above the door, though the holes remain. The blockhouse was built in 1814 to dissuade British bombardment of New York during the War of 1812, and was completed two days before hostilities ended.
