S.S. MOOSEHEAD

Image of the Maine Central Railroad passenger steamboat MOOSEHEAD underway in Maine waters, possibly on the Kennebec River.. Visible in image: Steamship MOOSEHEAD under way, with large jack and ensign flying from bow and stern, and name pennant and Maine Central Railroad pennant aft of the pilothouse. Two people, idling, stand in her open freight hatch, but no other people are visible on deck. Her boats are covered and a cabin light is open aft of the stack. There is a chance this photograph was taken very shortly after her launch in 1911. S.S. MOOSEHEAD was built at Bath Iron Works in 1911 for the Maine Central Railroad. She was acquired by the United States Navy in March 1918 as USS MOOSEHEAD. She served as a transport/ferry, being renamed USS PORPOISE in 1920, until she was stricken from the Navy List in 1930. Sold the next year, she remained active until she was wrecked in December 1941. Cataloger's note: This object is a copy negative of a print of a photograph presumably by James E. Perkins. The identity of the copyist and the date on which the copy was made are not certain.
