S.S. BOOTHBAY sunk
Image of the Eastern Steamship Company steamboat BOOTHBAY sunk off her pier in Bath, Maine. Visible in image: BOOTHBAY is under water up to her upper deck and lists to starboard. A salvage barge equipped with a large derrick is pumping water out of the steamboat. Salvagers work aboard BOOTHBAY, while the steam tug NEPONSET renders further assistance. People observe, supervise, and just gawk from the decks of BOOTHBAY and NEPONSET and the wharf beyond. BOOTHBAY was built in 1907 and served the Eastern Steamship Company until she was commissioned into the United States Navy as USS BOOTHBAY in 1917. She was renamed USS GRAMPUS in 1920, decommissioned in 1930, and subsequently sold. The exact date of this incident is not presently known. Cataloger's note: This object is a copy negative of a print of a photograph presumably by James E. Perkins. The identity of the copyist and the date on which the copy was made are not certain.
