Gvt. house at entrance to Ft. Popham
Image of the U.S. Government quarters for the caretaker of the Fort Popham installation and the entrance to the installation at Hunnewell's Point, Popham village, Maine. Visible in image: At center, on Larey's Rock, is the house originally built by Ebeneezer Chapel in 1840 and purchased by the U.S. government along with Hunnewell's Point in 1862. It was used as living quarters for the ordnance sergeant responsible for overseeing the installation when it was not active. To the right of the house is the gate marking the boundary of the U.S. government reservation. Buildings of the installation line the point to the left of the house, largely consisting of what appear to be storehouses or boat houses. The photograph was likely taken from the pier behind the Perkins-Stacey general store. Ice on Atkins Bay betrays the season.
