Coast Guard crew and surf boat
Image of members of the United States Life Saving Service, Hunnewell's Beach station, on a boat drill off Popham Beach, Maine. Visible in image: Six Life Saving Service crew row a surf boat out into the Kennebec River on one of their regular boat drills. The boat's coxwain is probably the keeper of the Life Saving Station, most likely John H. Spinney, who served from January 1891 until his death in November 1909. The man third from left resembles James E. Perkins (although that would leave in question the identity of the photographer), and the man second from right seems to resemble Augustus Hodgkins, mate on the steamboat WINTER HARBOR. However, only Spinney's identity is probable, and none are established for certain. In the background is Gilbert Head, Georgetown, and the Clark house built thereon.
