Cannon
Image of a pair of Rodman cannon in a wooden revetment at Hunnewell's Point, Popham, Maine. Visible in image: Two Rodman guns on front-pivot mounts stand behind a wooden revetment. Snow or sand has drifted in at right. In 1898, in response to Spanish-American War fears, four 15-inch Rodman cannon and one 8-inch breechloading rifle were emplaced in a line leading up Hunnewell's Point toward one corner of Fort Popham. The 8-inch gun was deployed in a concrete casemate, but the Rodman cannon--of Civil War vintage, and so long obsolete--were placed in earth and wood revetments. The Rodmans were removed in 1907 as Fort Baldwin neared completion, and the 8-inch rifle was removed when Fort Baldwin was armed.
