At a beach along Square Pond in Shapleigh, Maine, a skiff and a canoe sit pulled up on the sand near a pier; behind, a powerboat and a seaplane are tied up at the pier. Two tall pine trees stand silhoutted dramatically at the right of the frame. Square Pond lies roughly 30 miles north of Kittery near the western Maine border. The shallow pond covers 877 acres and feeds into Mousam lake to the south. Numerous cabins and cottages cluster along its 10.8 mile shoreline; it's a popular vacation and fishing spot.
