At a beach on Square Pond in Shapleigh, Maine, a portable pier with a single-axis wheel base stands in shallow water a few feet out. A lone pine tree stands to the side; its crown is above the frame but shades the sand. Cottages or cabins dot the far shore across the water. Square Pond lies roughly 30 miles north of Kittery near the western Maine border. The shallow pond covers 877 acres and feeds into Mousam lake to the south.
