Ye Olde Forte Cabins, Pemaquid Beach, Maine
View down to water between two sets of tourist cabins at Pemaquid Beach. The image depicts a style of automobile tourist lodging that preceded the linear motel style. Cabins, usually including two beds, a bathroom, and sometimes a kitchenette, offered a more affordable option than the hotel for families on driving vacations. Ye Olde Forte Cabins were built on a field sloping down to the water below a 19th century house that stands just out of the frame at the left. The cabins were likely quite new when this picture was taken. The "Ye Olde Forte" name was taken from the nearby Fort William Henry at Pemaquid, a replica of the 17th-century local landmark.
