Cottage at Weathervane, Readfield, Maine K10
Image is a view of the Weathervane Restaurant on Maranacook Lake, taken from across the road. The building is low-slung with a cupola. Large signs mounted on the wal read: "The Weathervane" and "Dining Room." Customers' automobiles are parked outside. Mature trees tower over the scene. The restaurant and its tourist cottage offered a scenic view of the lake, and surely appealed to the many seasonal tourists and campers staying in the region. Roadside eateries such as this sprang up along state routes before and after World War II, as American families hit the road in their automobiles seeking out summertime vacation spots. In time many of these establishments were superceded by the interstates and their attendant services.
