Main St., Spencer, N.Y. 13.
Three-story brick buildings dominate the view of an intersection in the center of a small downtown. Multiple signs posting the mileages to various surrounding towns such as "Syracuse (75) Elmira (27) Ithaca (8) " stand at the corners, while businesses and services such as the lunch room and Post Office occupy the storefronts at the right. This image is part of a series made by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to New England or upstate New York. The glass plates would be sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the printing plant on High Street. The presence of sidewalks and utility poles indicate a level of modernity in this small community located near the Pennsylvania border, as does a row of young trees planted to soften and shade the urban streetscape. At the right a group of men have stopped to admire an early motor tricycle parked at the curb near the Post Offfice.
