Ahern Bros., Saranac, N.Y. 13

Roadside image of a simple clapboard commercial building with a storefront in a rural setting. An early motor car is parked outside. At the right is a utility pole. This image is part of a series made by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to New England or upstate New York. The glass plates would be sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the printing plant on High Street. The store is identified as "Ahern Bros" on a sign above the door. The business evidently stood on a site out of town. Cigars were a popular item amd often advertised to draw cutomers into a shop. A sign in the panel below the window reads: "No other tobacco can be like Prince Albert/ The patented process fixes that". The photo's overexposure creates a dematerializing effect, with the building seeming to hover over its site.
