View L.S. Station So. Lubec ME. 80.

Image across beach grass of a frame building and beach with higher land in the background. The vernacular Gothic Revival U.S. Life Saving Station in Carrying Place Cove bears the sign: "U.S. LS Station" on its end wall, suggesting the photograph was made prior to 1915, when the life saving system merged with the US Revenue Cutter Service in 1915 to form the U. S. Coast Guard. [Maine Memory Network]. The system, a mix of stocked huts and manned life saving stations scattered along the less populated stretches of the northeast coast to serve shipwrecked crews and pasengers, had been formalized in 1878 --likely just before this building was constructed. Located on the isthmus west of Quoddy Head, the Station faced the Grand Manan Channel, open to the Atlantic Ocean. The post in the left foreground may have served as a place to secure the line shot from shore out to a foundering ship, via which survivors could be brought in. It may also have been used as a ladder to gain higher perspective out to sea.
