Bandstand and Odd Fellows Hall, Limerick Maine L1

Image shows a streetscape in the center of town on a quiet summer day in the early to mid 1960s. Two dwellings, including a mid-19th century Greek Revival and an earlier house stand at the left. Behind, largely obscured, is a large older brick building. Partially visible at the far right is a late-19th century structure that may have been some sort of a community hall. The Limerick Academy Building stands at the end of the street. Chartered in 1803, the Academy occupied this structure after it was built in 1881 until the institution closed in 1926. The school offered both a Latin and a General course of study. At the time this image was taken, the building was owned by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The presence of elms trees and the automobiles' sleeker lines lend this scene a distinctly 1960s small-town feel.
