Image of the Raymond H. Fogler Library, an imposing brick library building, conprised of a large, gabled center block, and secondary blocks at each end. The view is taken from across a broad, flat lawn. Three entrance doors in a white masonry bay in the building's center block define the main access into the building and center the symmetrical facade. The second and thrid stories of the center block contain tall, arched two-story windows, likely identifying the space behind as the Library's Reading Room. The simple, three-story ells probably contain the stacks. The library's foundation was laid in 1941, but was not completed until 1947 due to World War II. In 1962, it was renamed to honor Maine native, University of Maine alumnus and the final Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Raymond H. Fogler. In the following year, the library became a regional depository site for government documents. As of 2011, it is a depository for a number of collections, including the multi-generation political families of the Williamsons and the Hamlins. It is also home to the works of writer Stephen King, journalist Ralph W. 'Bud' Leavitt Jr. and politician William Cohen. Raymond H. Fogler Library at the University of Maine is the largest research library in Maine, with a 150-year history supporting the faculty, students, and staff of the University as well as residents of the State of Maine. The current collection includes approximately 3.6 million print volumes, including government documents, as well as 1.6 million microforms. The library provides access to more than 615,000 e-books, 104,000 online serials, 380 online databases, and 154,000 media titles. Fogler Library is the regional depository for federal government publications and an official depository for Canadian federal and Maine state government publications. The library is also the designated State Research Library for Business, Science, and Technology, and is the only Patent and Trademark Resource Center in Maine.
