Lord Hall, University of Maine, Orono, Maine B42
Image of a large brick academic building on the University of Maine campus at Orono. The structure is Lord Hall, one of the original buildings from the school's first phase of construction (1863-1913). The structure's vaguely Italianate-Classical Revival style carried out in brick, stone, and cement is typical of American college buildings of the period. Located in the core of the campus, Lord Hall is part of a designated historic district which encompasses ten of the original buildings comprising the campus. Lord Hall backs onto the Mall and has an imposing front entrance on Munson Road. Built in 1904 as a shop for engineering departments, Lord Hall contained a forge and foundry in the rear ell. The building with its distinctive granite trimmings above the first-floor windows has been extensively remodeled several times and now houses the Department of Art. Throughout the year, Lord Hall Gallery showcases exhibitions of work by student, faculty and visiting artists. Lord Hall was named for business and political leader Henry Lord, president of the university’s Board of Trustees, 1892–1908.
