Theta Chi fraternity is a large, early 20th century fraternity house on or near the University of Maine campus. The design of the large front porch, the dormers, the use of stucco as well as shingles and Tudor detail in the gable ends identifies the building as Arts & Crafts Style. Theta Chi was founded in 1856 at Norwich academy in Vermont. Its two founding members were Fredrick Norton Freeman and Arthur Chase. The Gamma chapter of Theta Chi was the third chapter in the country and was opened at the University of Maine, Orono in 1907. Theta Chi was originally a military fraternity, since it was founded at Norwich. However, it has spread to many campuses around the country, and today there are more than 140 active chapters.
