Image of Portland Head Lighthouse and keeper's house on Cape Elizabeth. Cushing and Peak's Islands are visible in the distance. Marking the southwestern point of land off Portland's outer harbor, Cape Elizabeth was the first site of a lighthouse in Maine. With a 50' site above sea level, the 72' stone tower built in 1791 must have significantly improved navigation for mariners approaching from Casco Bay. Many modifications were made to the tower over the years, with the final and current height of 101' feet above sea level achieved in 1885. The present two-family keepers' house was built in 1891, replacing an earlier dwelling. The two corner porches are situated to give each family private entryways and protected outdoor spaces for enjoying fine days. The house is attached via ells to the base of the tower, for protection in severe weather. [no title] [source: Jeremy D' Entremont, "New England Lighthouses: A Virtual Guide"]
