Cong. Church and Union House, Glover, VT. 26

Image of a mid-19th century hotel (The Union House), and Congregational Church next door on an unpaved road. The presence of the two prominent structures and a partly visible structure at the far right suggest the setting is the center of the village. Both the hotel and church look a bit run-down. The large clapboard frame hotel with porches on the ground and second stories is typical of early and mid-19th century New England hotels. The building stands right up against the street so travelers could alight directly from a carriage. A large connected barn is at the rear. The frame church, bascially a gabled rectangular block with long windows in front, is typical of early 19th century New England meetinghouses. Also common is the large wooden bell tower surmounted by a steeple and tall weathervane. Although only the front corner of the structure opposite is visible, its architecture makes clear that this is a later 19th century town or school building, and that this was likely the center of town. The unimproved nature of the buildings and the road reflect the fact that Glover, located in northeastern Vermont, was by-passed by later 9th century industrial and economic development. The hotel is currently a nursing home. The church appears to have retained its use and appearance.
