"What look like railroad tracks are in fact tracks for the trolley that ran from Bennington (direction top of image) down to Williamstown MA, built in c. 1907. Today's U.S. Highway 7 was built in 1960, more or less along the lines of the old trolley. Since the '60s the road that ran through the village has been a dead-end street; the bridge crossing the tracks at 8 o'clock was not retained or rebuilt. Pownal's Union Church and its carriage barn are pretty obvious, but Pownal's town hall (behind the church) can't be seen." -- James Donnen 2021
