Kendall Corner, West Swanzey, N.H. 48.

View of an unpaved intersection in a rural village. The scene shows houses facing across a corner on a quiet summer day. This image is part of a series made by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to cover New England or upstate New York. The glass plates would be sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the printing plant on High Street. On the right, a larger, early 19th century house with an added third story with a Mansard roof and dormers dominates the intersection. Just beyond it are the sagging lines of an older and simpler house. At the left, a fitted stone wall defines the front yard of another residence; down the hill is a farm yard with a shack and pasture. Although the scene is bucolic and seemingly untouched by modernity, the presence of utility poles indicates the passage of time.
