The Pines, Lake Mattawa Orange, Mass. 85
Two men dressed in suits and bowler hats pose near the porch door of a camp cabin in woods on a lakeshore. Just visible inside the open doorway is a rocking chair and a rope hammock. The porch is large, about the same size as the interior of the cabin, made for enjoying pleasant summer days. The simple structure in an unspoiled setting, this one on Lake Mattawa in mid-eastern Massachusetts, is typical of the scores of private and tourist camps that sprang up along New England lakes and ponds during the early part of the 20th century, aided by the increase in automobile ownership and family driving vacations.
