This view of the Washington County courthouse in Machias, though partly obscured by elms, shows the building's 2½ storeys clearly, and the square tower surmounting it is just visible. This Italianate-style building was designed by a self-taught Bangor, Maine architect, Benjamin Deane, who was one of the early professional architects to begin working in Downeast Maine. Deane also designed the Waldo County courthouse in Belfast (adjacent to Searsport, home to Penobscot Marine Museum).
