This view of downtown Machias shows a handful of cars—mostly 4-door sedans of a style popular in the 1930s—parked around a block of buildings housing retail businesses, and perhaps offices or apartments in the second storey. An IGA (International Grocers' Alliance) grocery store occupies a lower corner of the block near the left of the frame. Other storefronts are less distinct but include a retailer selling furniture or luggage (Hall-Hanscom & Co.), a mortician, and a Ford dealership. The street is empty of pedestrians. A low cylindrical structure of granite blocks sits at the intersection of two streets; this may have been the town well.
