Burleigh Davidson House, So. Berwick, Maine D537

A view of the Burleigh-Davidson Building on the campus of the Berwick Academy. The academy was founded in 1791 by citizens of Berwick, York and Wells. The school has continued since then evolving with the conditions of the community and times. It was around the time this photo was taken when the school reverted back to a private prep school. This building in 2022 is used as the administration building. The building was designed in 1893 by the Boston architectural firm Kendall and Stevens for the family of a sea captain, John Holmes Burleigh, who was town’s U. S. Congressman and proprietor of the Great Works woolen mill.
