St. Joseph's Convent, South Berwick, Maine E7

A view of the St. Joseph's Convent on 224 Main Street in South Berwick, Maine. The convent was one of numerous uses for this building which is a National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1798 for Winthrop B. Norton, who owned other property in town. A widow named Sarah Frost bought it 1816 and opened the Frost Tavern soon after which hosted President James Monroe in 1817, as well as American Revolution hero Gen. Lafayette in 1825. After Frost's death, Josiah Paul expanded the business and was the innkeeper until he died in 1892. Later, the building became St. Rose's School, St. Joseph's Convent, the Academy of St. Joseph the Bible Speaks Church and more recently as a storage building for the Seacoast Christian School. In 2018 it was renovated by developer James Flynn and now is operated as the Stage House Inn and offers 20 rooms and dining.
