W.H. Anderson Store, Bantam, Conn. 4.
A row of three modest frame buildings along an unpaved street. A couple of men in apron coats - likely the proprietors-- pose outside with a dog; another man in a car turns to face the camera. This image is part of a series made by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to cover New England or upstate New York. The quest for images that would be saleable as postcards resulted in the documentation of small towns and small town life at the turn of the 20th century. As the photos were shot, the glass plates were promptly sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the printing plant on High Street. W.H. Anderson is the storefront on the left. The shop on the right bears a sign reading "Bantam Bakery & Confectionery". A sign posted on the utility pole at the left advertises "The Danbury Troy Laundry Co....Agency".
