Bates Manufacturing Company - Over 100 Years Old - Saco, Maine C74
View of a five-story brick mill complex and a river, taken from a nearby bridge. The image shows part of the vast complex of cotton mills, known as York Mills, built during the 19th century on Saco Island (also known as Factory Island), between the towns of Biddeford and Saco, in the Saco River. New England Industries/Bates Manufacturing Company had purchased York Mills in 1930. The operation, which produced finished cotton fabrics and goods, was shut down in 1958, a casualty of competition from manufacturers in the South.
