R.R. Crossing Elms, Corfu, N.Y. 22

Scene of a dirt lane at a railroad crossing, with a switch tower, crossing gates and warning sign, seen under and just beyond Elm trees flanking the lane. The specifically designed switch tower, stood "...at the junction of two or more active railroad routes. Switchmen on the second floor set switches per employee timetables and special orders received via telegram from dispatchers. Switches and signals were connected to long levers in the tower, via long pipes and pivots running alongside and under the tracks." (source: Cameron Gilchrist) This is part of a series of images made by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to New England or upstate New York. The glass plates would be sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the printing plant on High Street.
