Main St., Conewango Valley, N.Y. 36
Scene in a small rural town, with basic frame commercial buildings facing a dirt street. A railroad crossing is visible in the distance. The hamlet of Conewango Valley is located in the lower fork of far west New York state. The shops in the image appear to be mostly automobile-related. At the left is a building with a second story porch and parapet false front. The first floor has a storefront with a gas pump outside on the street. Another gas pup is visible across the road as well as one farther down. Several Model T touring cars are parked on either side, a couple near a garage on the left. This is part of a series of images made by one of the three Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Company photographers assigned to New England or upstate New York. The glass plates would be sent back to Belfast, Maine, and processed into postcards at the printing plant on High Street.
